It's 2015! Integrated Projects are all Underway!

Students in the Biotechnology Academy are currently engrossed in their first semester integrated projects. In each cohort, major projects are underway.

Biology/Biotechnology students are collecting their own garbage for the consumption and conservation unit.  In biology, students have been sorting and weighing out their garbage every 24 hours. Monday, Jan. 12 is the last garbage weigh in date. Then, they will analyze their personal consumption data in their math classes.  In language arts, they will write a persuasive letter to argue for change in resource consumption.

Emptying, sorting garbage, and preparing for the next day.

Biology/Biotechnology students are also researching and developing their second semester project which is centered on the Imagine Tomorrow competition to be held on May 29-31, 2015 at Washington State University.  Students are currently in their planning stages for this project which challenges them to address a solution to energy issues both locally and globally.  For more info, check out the link for Imagine Tomorrow 2015.  This year's theme is: Fuel it Forward

Chemistry/Biotechnology students are working on re-writing their final drafts for the Really? essay. This is a research paper assignment that asks students to verify a scientific claim by researching the claim and writing a persuasive essay supporting or refuting the claim. Students must research both sides of the claim and present their conclusions in writing.

The impetus for this project is based on the Really? column from the New York Times. For examples from this column, please check out the link. New York Times-Really? Column

Genetics/Biotechnology students are presenting summaries of their research papers that focused on a particular genetic disorder.  Since early November, students have chosen a disorder that they then researched.  Part of the project required that they conduct a primary source interview with someone who has first-hand knowledge of the disorder.

Genetics/Biotechnology students are also preparing for their second semester project which is participation in the Student BioExpo.  Students can choose to participate in one of twelve different categories in the BioExpo. For more information, check out the link for the Student BioExpo.
